Registered with Pedigree

Any puppy whose parents are registered with the AKC can be registered.  It's a simple process.  You send the your money to the AKC along with  information on the parents and what do you know.-- they send you back some papers with numbers on it and your puppy is registered.  Same process for the pedigree.  You send AKC the money, they check out their records , make you a list of your puppies ancestors and you get the pedigree.  They'll send you a pedigree for as far back as you've got money to pay for.

I'm not trying to say that registration and pedigrees are bad.  Quite the opposite - it's totally necessary.  The AKC works relentlessly trying to insure that the dogs bred by breeders are well cared for and that the pedigree on the puppies are the correct ones.  But, does that mean your puppy meets all the standards of the Maltese?  Certainly not - it can offer no assurances as to the appearance, health, or temperament of your dog.

Thousand of litters of puppies are registered with the AKC every year.  The honor of the breeder is the heart of this process.  Usually the word of the breeder is all that is necessary  for registration.  Needless to say, they cannot inspect every breeder and tend to concentrate on breeders who register numerous litters each year to be certain that information on registration and pedigrees is accurate.  DNA testing may be done to insure accuracy of pedigree.  The records and facilities of breeders are open to inspection by AKC at any time.

DNA testing is the heart of determining the qualities of your dog.  It can insure that your dog is "purebred".  This is more important that registration.  A dog may be registered without being purebred and vice versa a dog may be purebred without being registered.  Being purebred  means that the parents of the dog, going back many generations, have the same genes necessary to produce the standard traits of a breed.

If this is getting confusing... what you need to know is that the pedigree and registration papers on a puppy are only the starting point in determining the qualities and traits of your puppy.
